Recovery Housing For Men

The Harlem House is a recovery residence for men 18 and older who are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction and want a structured, supervised place to live while they rebuild.

Most residents come to us from treatment, detox, a hospital, a halfway house or incarceration, and many are referred by courts, probation and parole. Medication-assisted treatment is welcome when prescribed by a Pennsylvania physician.

This is a voluntary program, and you can choose to leave at any time.

What Residents Are Expected To Do

The program is built around the habits that make early recovery stick: meetings, a sponsor, accountability, and a steady routine. These expectations come straight from our resident manual, and every resident agrees to them before moving in.

Weekly House MeetingsAssigned Chores

Recovery Meetings

Seven 12-step or other recovery meetings a week (five if working) during roughly your first six months.

A Sponsor

Find a sponsor and a home group soon after you move in, and work the steps with them.

Random Drug Testing

Residents are tested at random. Using, refusing a test, or a positive test means leaving the program.

Work Or School

Be working, looking for work, or enrolled in school or vocational training while you live in the house.

What To Know Before You Move In

The rules keep the house safe for everyone in it. Here are the answers to the questions people ask us most.

What is the curfew?

Curfew is 11pm Monday through Thursday and midnight Friday through Sunday. If a court has set a curfew for you, that one takes priority. Residents sign out when they leave and back in when they return, with where they are going and a contact number.

How much does it cost?

The monthly Program Participation Fee is $600, which covers your bed and the cost of running the program. Drug tests are $25 each. Residents take part in a recovery program rather than renting a room, so the program fee is not rent. Ask us about payment arrangements when you call.

Is medication-assisted treatment allowed?

Yes. We do not turn people away for being on medication-assisted treatment such as Suboxone or Vivitrol, as long as it is prescribed and managed by a physician licensed in Pennsylvania. Residents take their own prescribed medications, which are kept in locked storage and logged by the house manager.

Can I have visitors or stay overnight somewhere else?

Visitors must be clean and sober, stay in the common areas, and never bring alcohol, drugs or weapons into the house. Residents earn two overnights a month once they have lived in the house for 90 days. Overnights are a privilege and can be taken away.

What gets someone removed from the house?

Using alcohol or drugs, refusing or failing a drug test, violence or threats, carrying a weapon, theft and illegal activity are grounds for leaving the program. Gambling and smoking indoors are not allowed.

What are the house responsibilities?

Everyone has assigned weekly chores and helps keep the shared spaces clean, including trash and snow removal. Every resident attends the weekly house meeting with the house manager.

How long can I stay?

There is no fixed length of stay. Our goal is for every resident to put together at least 90 days free from alcohol and drugs, get involved in the recovery community, and find work or schooling before moving on. Residents who complete the program receive a completion certificate. If you were referred by a court or probation, we work with your referral source on any required length of stay.

How do I get a bed?

Apply online in about ten minutes. A member of our team reads every application and reaches out within 24 hours. You then meet with the house manager, who goes over the rules and answers your questions. If it is a fit, you sign the resident agreement, complete a short intake and move in.

How Funds Are Used

The Linden Grove Foundation leases the Harlem House from a private property owner. Each resident’s $600 monthly Program Participation Fee covers the cost of that housing, and any money left over goes back to supporting residents. We don’t profit from the Program Participation Fee.

Donations help residents directly: help with program fees for those who need it, bus passes, household supplies, and items for the house.
